About Us

We started off as a small group on 16 June1978 and were part of the Ramblers Association. The prime aim of the group was to ensure local footpaths were traced and referenced for the Definitive Map being prepared for Devon County Council and to organise walks. The walks were alternated between morning and afternoon on weekdays with the occasional longer walk on Saturday or Sunday. The first chair was Trevor Barker whilst local author Harry Starkey was treasurer.
By 1983 membership had increased to 125 and 93 walks were organised. Later the club agreed to be affiliated to the Ramblers Association, ie not a full member, but now we are fully independent. .
The subscription was £1 in 1991 (about £24 at today’s prices!), a club badge was designed, walks flourished, holidays and social events were organised. The walk programme increased to two Sunday walks, a Wednesday walk and a Thursday walk and map tuition was provided.
The group has grown steadily ever since, to the point where we now have about 350 members who live all over Devon with a few beyond the county boundaries. Five walks are organised every week with two shorter walks once a month ie a whopping 270 walks a year all for an annual subscription of £5.
The Past Walks Archive page of this website is a record of our walks from 1979 to the present and currently has over nine thousand entries.
Our activities are co-ordinated by a Committee of around a dozen volunteers, each subject to re-election by members at our Annual General Meeting. The Events Committee organise a range of social events including club walking holidays which are available to members.
