FAQ

It doesn’t matter where you live! If you can get to a walk start – come and join us- 15 to 30 minutes before the walk start time.

What distance do the walks cover and what time do they start?
Sunday and Wednesday ‘A’ walks are 8-12 miles or more. Start at 10:00
Tuesday ‘A’ walks are between 7 and 8½ miles. Start at 10:30
‘B’ Walks are 5 to 6 miles. Start at 11:00
Café Walks are around 3 miles. Start at 12:00
‘C’ Walks will only be about 2 miles. Start at 10:45
An A+ Walk is a more strenuous A Walk, while an A- Walk indicates an easier than usual A Walk.
Remember to arrive 15-30 minutes before the start time the walk. If you are not sure you can manage the length of an A Walk, try a B Walk first instead.
You are not tied to either group, and many of our walkers go on both A and B walks.

How can I prepare for an emergency?
Phone coverage can be patchy in the South West. To maximise the chance of using your phone it is a good idea to have it registered it to the emergency services. To do this text “register” to 999 or 112. Almost immediately you will get a reply – then follow the instructions you are sent. Registering has the advantage of accessing every available network whilst texting use a different bandwidth to the telephone and can work when the signal is weak or intermittent.

What time do the walks end?
This varies considerably, but a rough guide is 2mph including breaks.

What do I need to wear?
Walking boots and suitable clothing for the weather conditions. Once you have checked the forecast select the necessary clothing to protect against rain, wind, the cold and the sun … but remember our weather can change suddenly.

What do I need to bring with me?
This is very dependent on the weather, but you will need a to carry a drink, snack and a packed lunch plus suitable clothing for the weather conditions. Please carry a walker’s passport (available from the walk co-ordinator or on this website). A mobile phone with the walk leaders number added is useful.

How do I find the walk starting point?
The walk details in the walks programme will give you a Grid Reference and usually the nearest post code and possibly W3W///. If the Meet at point is in the middle of nowhere, the postcode will only take you to the nearest address, which may be some distance from the actual starting point of the walk, but the walk description will give you more information.

Do you have a car sharing scheme?
We do not run a scheme, but we do encourage car sharing. Our members come from a wide area and existing members often car share. Walk leaders often offer a lift in the walk description and they can be contacted to make the arrangements. If you are a new member, please contact the walk coordinator who may be able to arrange a car share.

Are dogs allowed on walks?
Dogs are allowed on walks at the discretion of the leader. They should always be kept under control to the leader’s satisfaction preferably on a short static lead. Where specific conditions apply these regulations must always be complied with.

Do I need to worry about ticks?
Ticks are common particularly where sheep and deer live. It is important to remove them as soon as possible with tick tweezers, or a plastic tick card which are easy to use. These tools are available online or from a chemist and it is a good idea to carry one.

Does the walk go ahead whatever the weather?
Cancellation of a walk is at the leader’s discretion in conjunction with the Walk Coordinator. In the advent of adverse weather conditions being forecast or very difficult walking conditions, whenever possible all members will be notified by e-mail and the website updated. Occasionally this decision may be made on the day and a call to the walk leader will avoid a wasted journey. Sometimes an alternative walk will be offered.

How do I report a footpath problem?
Please contact our Footpath Secretary via admin email. State clearly what the problem is e.g. fallen tree blocking path, broken style. Give details of where the problem is either using the grid reference or ‘what 3words’.
